Optometric Eye Care Services

Doctors of Optometry are primary health care professionals for the eye. They examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures, as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.

Optometrists prescribe medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, and contact lenses—and perform certain ocular procedures. They assist in determining the need for surgery and comanage care after surgery.

An optometrist has to complete a pre-professional undergraduate degree in college, followed by four years of professional education in a college of optometry. Many optometric eye care doctors also complete a residency in a specific area of practice after obtaining their degree.
